Themes of nature continue to intrigue Jan Serr as she has been exploring new techniques in painting with her recent studies and completed pieces.

Canvases that are part of the new Ground Work series are currently on view at Tory Folliard Gallery. These brightly hued compositions combine forms of nature but with an imaginative element as Serr works from memory in her studio, using a dark ground to dramatically capture a sense of floating above a richly textured landscape, decorated with grasses and bright leaves. These paintings are connected to her earlier series, Downstream and Leaves and Branches, but offer a departure from the formers’ more naturalistic palette in favor of inventive colors and a more expressionistic style.
